Acting Swiftly
The lady who had initially found the hurt kitten contacted Jen’s Kitty Rehab, a non-profit cat rescue group based in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The moment Jen noticed the message on her Facebook page, she sprang into action without delay. She couldn’t imagine allowing the kitty to suffer any longer without getting the help and affection it required. The little feline had two injured legs, one of which was completely immobile due to a fracture, and the other was also wounded, leaving it in agony. Jen began to prepare herself for the worst possible outcome.
Jen revealed that there was a possibility of amputating the leg of her 5-week-old and under 4-pound pet. However, the vet suggested to wait until the pet reaches a safe weight before proceeding with the surgery. Jen decided to keep the pet and ensure its safety until it was ready for the operation.
When Jen realized she would have Berlioz as her companion for a long time, she affectionately gave him a name after the grey kitten in Disney’s classic film The Aristocats. Although Berlioz was initially dealing with some pain, he quickly revealed himself to be a friendly and playful feline. However, his physical health wasn’t quite up to par for the high level of activity he desired.
Jen shared that there was a point in time when she left Berlioz to recover on his own because she was worried that he might hurt himself if he played too much. However, she noticed that Berlioz started to lose his appetite due to loneliness. Jen knew that kittens, like human babies, crave social interaction. Given everything that Berlioz had gone through, Jen realized that he needed a feline friend to keep him company. She believed that it’s not enough for Berlioz to heal physically; he also needs to be happy in order to be completely healthy. Hence, Jen supervised Berlioz’s playtime with other rescue kittens, allowing him to have some much-needed socialization.
The Little One with a Big Heart
Berlioz’s loneliness vanished, and he started eating more and putting on weight. With each passing day, he grew bigger and stronger, driven by the excitement of having friends to frolic with. Despite his inability to use his right leg, he found ways to compensate and navigate by relying on his strong left leg.
But, a major issue arose! Jen disclosed that Berlioz used to walk on the wrong side of his foot that caused his fur to fall off and skin damage on his injured leg. This made Jen anxious about the likelihood of infection. However, Berlioz himself realized that this gait was detrimental for his well-being. Eventually, as he regained his strength, he started walking correctly on his foot.
The Real Story Uncovered
On multiple occasions, Jen took her furry friend Berlioz to the veterinarian to determine if he was fit for his operation. During each visit, the vet would examine the feline’s foot to check if he had regained sensation. According to Jen, the expert would pinch his little toe to see if any feeling had returned, and on one occasion, Berlioz let out a tiny yelp and retracted his foot.
Jen and the vet were surprised when they discovered that Berlioz had regained sensation in his leg. It felt like a miracle! Instead of planning for an amputation, the vet scheduled a neuter surgery for him. Luckily, Berlioz was adopted soon after and found a loving family. His irresistible charm won over everyone who met him. It’s a happy ending for Berlioz!
Jen shared that Berlioz is currently living in a wonderful abode surrounded by feline and canine companions. She mentioned that he often snuggles up with his dog friend, and seems content with all the love and attention he receives. It’s safe to say that Berlioz is now a happy rescue cat thanks to his new family and furry friends.
