Family Learns Newly Adopted Cat Has Potentially Fatal Disease, But They Stick with Him

On October 1, we found ourselves in a local animal shelter to help look for a friend’s lost cat. As we were leaving, we couldn’t help but notice two adorable 3-month-old kittens that were brothers. The shelter was running a “pumpkin spice” promotion for the month of October, where you could adopt an orange, black, or “spiced” colored kitten for $5. We had no intention of adopting that day, but as we started to exit the shelter, our hearts were telling us to turn back around.

We played with both brothers, but ultimately decided it would be best to adopt just one, and we immediately bonded with our little boy Sirius. We took him home and he immediately became comfortable. Within a few days, we noticed that he was very sick. We called a 24-hour emergency vet and got him in as soon as possible.

After several hours of tests, they diagnosed him with feline panleukopenia, which can be fatal once contracted. The vet wanted to hospitalize him, which wasn’t an option for us, but there was also no way we were going to return him to the shelter like the shelter suggested to us. We opted to do at home treatment, which required lots of intensive care, love, administering him IVs ourselves, antibiotics, and feeding him prescription food. Though we were given very slim chances of survival, Sirius pulled through and made a full recovery.

Sirius is now just over 6-months-old, and is the best kitten we could ask for. He’s extremely playful, but also extremely loving and cuddly. He follows us everywhere we go, plays fetch with his favorite mouse toy, and knows exactly when it’s bed time… he even gives us hugs when cuddling us in his sleep! He’s the most handsome and photogenic fur ball we’ve ever met, and we are fur-ever grateful that we adopted him and nursed him back to health! He completes us and fills our hearts with love.
